About the NJROTC Program

The Proviso Township High Schools offer students the opportunity to participate in the Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, which fulfills elective credit in the curriculum and may be substituted for physical education credit.

The NJROTC Program was established by Congress in 1964. Instructors who are retired Navy, Marine, Coast Guard officers and enlisted personnel conduct the program at secondary schools throughout the United States. The NJROTC curriculum emphasizes citizenship and leadership development, as well as our maritime heritage, the significance of sea power, and naval topics. These include the fundamentals of naval operations, seamanship, and meteorology. Classroom instruction is augmented throughout the year by community service activities, drill competition, field meets, flights, visits to naval activities and environments, marksmanship training, and other military training. Academics make up 60% of the coursework, while military drill and other training make up the remaining 40%. The Navy provides uniforms, textbooks, training aids, travel allowance, and a substantial portion of instructors' salaries.
