About the Special Education Program


This department provides educational, vocational, and supportive services to students with identified deficits that adversely affect educational performance. Students must meet eligibility requirements for special education. All courses in this department, with the exception of Cooperative Work Training I and II, are Category I grade-weighted courses. Cooperative Work Training I and II are Category II (regular) grade-weighted courses.

EDUCATIONAL SERVICES provide specialized instruction in each of the four major disciplines: English, mathematics, science, and social studies. Individualized instruction allows students to progress at their own rate.

PRE-VOCATIONAL AND VOCATIONAL SERVICES provide specialized instruction in entry-level job skills and on-the-job experience relative to the student's abilities.

RELATED and SUPPORTIVE SERVICES include but are not limited to:

  1. Psychological (educational) testing
  2. Psychiatric evaluation and diagnosis
  3. Learning and behavior disabilities resource
  4. Emotional disorders resource
  5. Social work
  6. Speech therapy
  7. Homebound or hospital instruction
  8. State of Illinois Department of Rehabilitation Services<
  9. Screening through referral and staffing of students who may need Special Education services
COURSE PLACEMENT is determined through the special education staffing process:
  1. Course selection in Special Education programs and in Pre-Vocational Training courses
  2. Altering student placement within the Special Education Program
  3. Removing students from Special Education courses

Special Education Courses
Reading and Communications
E113 Grades 9-12
Prerequisite: Enrollment in Special Educ. 1 credit
Year course
This course emphasizes a multi-faceted approach to reading, which also includes emphasis on study skills, organizational skills, sound-symbol relationships, whose language, and receptive-expressive language development.

Physical Science
S114 Grade 10
Prerequisite: Enrollment in Special Educ. 1 credit
Year course
This is a collaborative teaching program in science and special education for students meeting their second unit science requirement.

Note: This course may also meet the graduation requirement in Health Education.

Civic Responsibility
G470 (G740 Sem. 2) Grade 12
Prerequisite: Enrollment in Special Educ. 0.5 credit
Semester course; offered second semester
This course is a continuation of Family and Community Living and concentrates on the responsibilities of adult life. Students develop an understanding of the need for government and law, the rights and responsibilities of voting and paying taxes and their importance to their lives as functioning members in a democratic society.

Transitional Skills Training (TST) Program
S114 Grades 9-12
Prerequisite: Placement by staffing Credit TBD
Year courses
This program is designed to meet vocational and independent living skills needs of students with severely delayed adaptive and social skills development. The program is competency based, and the major goal is to enable the students to make an independent transition from school to community.

Self-Contained Educational Program
Regular Educ. Course Codes Grades 9-12
Prerequisite: Placement by staffing Credit TBD
Year courses
This program is designed to meet the needs of Emotional Disordered (ED) students. It requires special placement according to the tenets of a student's IEP (Individual Educational Plan). The program addresses the social and emotional components of a student's life and education. Students may enroll in regular education classes, and they are provided auxiliary services as prescribed by their IEP.

Course codes and credits assigned to the regular education courses are used. Category II grade weighting applies.

Cooperative Work Training 1 CC
T127 (T257 Sem. 2) Grades 11, 12
Prerequisite: Enrollment in Special Educ.; 16 years of age; Consent of Dept. Chair 1 to 2 credits
Year course
This is a work-study program for students with special needs. Students must be sixteen years of age to qualify. Cooperative Work Training consists of a classroom phase and a work experience phase. This program emphasizes the need for a pursuit of gainful employment. It prepares the students for the adult world of work. The classroom phase emphasizes an understanding of consumer education, taxes, social security, budgeting, and insurance. The work experience phase presents direct on-the-job experience.

Note: These courses fulfill the CONSUMER EDUC. graduation requirement if both semesters are completed.

Cooperative Work Training 2 CC
T254 (T126 Sem. 2) Grade 12
Prerequisite: Enrollment in Special Educ.; 16 years of age; Consent of Dept. Chair 1 to 2 credits
Year course
These courses also require actual work experience. The classroom phase continues study of consumer related topics. Career goal development is heavily emphasized.

Note: These courses fulfill the CONSUMER EDUC. graduation requirement if both semesters are completed. They also are Category II grade-weighted courses.

Independent Study
X501 Grades 11, 12
Prerequisite: Department recommendation 0.5 to 1 credit
One or two semester course
Independent study must be appropriately designed and approved. The course will cover the knowledge and skills identified by the student working in cooperation with the selected faculty member.
