For the graduating class of 2011, two Proviso East High School students are shining as the top of their class. Both boast G.P.A.’s above 4.0 on a 4.0 scale. They say it feels good to be number one and number two as they prepare to walk the stage.
Asha McAllister of Maywood participated in nearly all aspects of drama, theatre, and student life at Proviso East. She is in drama club and a preventive theater troupe called “Youth Reality.” Asha has also worked with the school newspaper, and she serves as a member of the Proviso East National Honor Society. Now, she can add valedictorian to her resume.
“It’s definitely nice,” said Asha. “It’s nice that all the hard work has paid off. I’m excited and ready to graduate. This is an amazing time.”
Asha has accepted a full scholarship to attend Kenyon College in Ohio. She hopes to become a writer of young adult literature.
The salutatorian’s resume is also impressive. Brianna Wren of Broadview is known for her amazing talent as a saxophone player with the Proviso East Marching Band. She also played softball and basketball. She is an officer with the National Honor Society. She also served as Interact president and as a member of Proviso East’s student council. Now Brena will attend a 5-year program at Howard University to study accounting and ultimately finish with her M.B.A. Brena says she is excited about heading to Howard. She has big plans for her future.
“I’m really looking forward to starting in Howard’s business program,” said Brianna. “As soon as you get there, freshman year, you start networking and meeting with big companies. My goal is to get into the business honors program.”
Before they go on to their individual college programs, both students will enter PTHS 209’s Academic Hall of Fame. They will also be treated to lunch with the Superintendent on May 19, 2011 as recognition for their hard work and achievement.
Congratulations Pirates! Keep up the excellent work.
