Proviso East Hosts Girl Talk Conference “From Girlhood 2 Womanhood”
Proviso East High School’s all girl empowerment group, Girl Talk, hosted their annual Girl Talk Conference this week to help encourage and inspire the young ladies of Proviso East High School.
This year’s theme was “Girlhood 2 Womanhood.” The girls attended sessions with a variety of topics such as: depression, poetry writing, skin and make up, credit maintenance and repair, dating violence, and life after Proviso.
Ms. Geraldine Smith, of 102.3 F.M. is host of the radio talk show, A Pleasant Encounter, where she encourages women to understand who they are and prosper. Smith spoke to the ladies of Proviso East about believing in themselves, overcoming obstacles, and supporting one another.
“You have to love you first,” said Smith as she spoke with the students. “Know who you are. Be careful. Be wise and make wise decisions. I want you ladies to be thinkers, not just doers.”
Members of Girl Talk say they consistently get positive messages through the Girl Talk program but the conference served as reinforcement.
Nadia Marshall of the class of 2007 participated in Girl Talk during her junior and senior years at Proviso East. She came back to support this year’s conference.
“Girl Talk is a great program,” said Marshall. “Most young women need mentors; they need someone to help reinforce strong values—someone to tell them that there is something special in each of them. That’s why Girl Talk is so important.”
All of the students participating in Girl Talk (G.T.) received a G.T. t-shirt, G.T. backpack, H2O bottles, G.T. pen, keychain, stress ball, and personal care items. Each speaker also gave the students a gift.
Girl Talk is sponsored by Ms. Risa Caudle of Proviso East High School.
