Proviso East’s Science Department has received new science technology equipment that helps students grasp science lessons through integrated technology.
Lab quest is considered one of the most powerful and intuitive interfaces for science education. It engages students with hands-on science in the classroom or in the field. Using this technology, Proviso East science students are analyzing graphs, changing scientific variables, and utilizing various sensors through a hand held computer. The computer records the data, and instantly generates graphs that can be manipulated in a variety of ways to help students make the visual and mathematical connections to the variable being studied.
“It’s important that we integrate this new technology into our science classes because our students will be using this technology in college and some will use it in their career fields,” said Proviso East Chemistry Instructor Glen Lid. “It makes our science classes more interesting and leads to more hands-on learning and discovery. Students show great enthusiasm when using this top of the line technology.”
The equipment has built-in graphing and analysis software to help guide students during science lessons.
“This device is good to use when we’re measuring volume and pressure,” said PE Sophmore Alishea Brown. “Lab quest is fun, and it makes our experiments a lot easier. It helps us to better grasp our chemistry lessons because it gives so much immediate information.”
“Lab quest is just a fascinating device,” said Proviso East Sophomore Irving White. “The equipment teaches you a lot. It’s hand held and touch screen. While we’re doing our experiments we use it to examine graphs. We do things with lab quest that we can’t do on regular computers. It’s really nice.”
Lid first became introduced to Lab quest during professional development at Fermilab. Then, Mr. Edward Beidas, PE Science Department Chairman, petitioned the administration to purchase the equipment. The PE science instructors were trained on lab quest during Teacher Institute Day.
Now, the science department of Proviso East is equipped with the latest in science technology and students will continue to learn using the best tools available.
