The Proviso East Band is actively fund raising to participate in the 2010 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans next January.
The Sugar Bowl, in New Orleans, Louisiana, has a long and storied tradition of being one of College Football's greatest venues. It is one of the most prestigious marching band events in the nation. The Proviso East Marching Pirates were chosen to represent the state of Illinois in this year's Sugar Bowl. Due to lack of funds the band did not go, but the Bowl Games of America (BGA) left the invitation open for 2010. Cameron Hill, Director of Special Events for the Bowl Games of America (BGA) explained why the Proviso East Band was chosen in the first place.
"Given Proviso East's history of superior performance and musicality we thought they would be the perfect fit," said Hill. "At BGA we understand that a high school marching band is often the centerpiece of its community. The band's performance enriches not only the lives of the student musicians but also infuses pride and unity to the entire student body and community at large."
Though the band did not perform this year, they will continue to practice and raise funds with the hopes of attending next year's event. The band has already received support from the Proviso community. The "Parents in Tune" (Proviso East Band Parents) sponsored a fund raising event in December to assist in making the band's 2010 Sugar Bowl dreams a reality.
"Fundraising is extremely important because of the deficit in our district's budget," said PTHS 209 Board Secretary and Band Parent Ms. Sue Henry. "We know for a fact that when our band travels and people see and hear them play, our students get scholarships. The fundraisers will help our students get to where they need to go to be exposed to other band directors and colleges. We have so many talented students. When they travel to events like the Sugar Bowl they have a great chance of being offered four-year scholarships. So we'll be fund raising all year; not just for the Sugar Bowl but for other events that will give the students an opportunity to get college funding."
Persons interested in assisting with fund raising efforts should contact Mr. Reginald Wright, Band Director at (708) 202-1640 or Mrs. Pamela Woodard at (708) 202-1642 for further details.
