Proviso East Young Menís Club Continues to Inspire

Proviso East Men’s Club has launched its group program for the 2009-2010 school year to continue to inspire and encourage the young men of Proviso East High School.

The club is sponsored by the Proviso East Alumni Give Back Program. Through the Young Men’s Club sessions, students hear and dialogue with male alumnus speakers who talk about their lives as youth in Maywood (District 209), the impact that Proviso East High School has made on their lives, and the steps they took to achieve success.

“Often times, I counsel young men who have already experienced or dealt with issues pertaining to youth peer pressures i.e., drug usage, joining a gang, and dealing with anger and emotions,” said Glen Sevier, program coordinator and Proviso East school counselor. “There is a sense, which I feel, from these young men that they don’t have a male mentor that can and or will listen to their problems. I love the proactive conversations they discuss. The young men in the club talk about real issues and how they can work through them.”

So far this year the club has lawyers, doctors, actors, entertainers, professional athletes, policemen, firemen, businessmen and university professors, scheduled to come and speak to the group. They meet every Tuesday from 3:30pm – 4:30pm. Immediately following the meeting, students are able to take the activity bus home.

Young men who participate are also eligible to win various prizes donated by Proviso East Alumni. Eligible students may receive: tickets to the Chicago Bull games, a paintball outing, Chicago Bears tickets, restaurant gift cards, concert tickets, the Wii game console, laptop computers, bowling alley passes, movie passes, athletic gear, and North Riverside gift cards.

Recently members were awarded tickets for a White Sox baseball game and seats at the Chicago City Classic.
